New BHF Website Launched

Our New Website

We are delighted to announce that the BHF have just launched our new website. It has been designed to enhance access to our learning materials for multiple audiences and to allow us to have a powerful platform to share our research-led and evidence based best practice.

We are especially grateful to the Elise Pilkington Trust who have made this possible with their generous educational grant funding to the BHF. This grant will allow us to disseminate our learning materials across wide audiences for many years to come.

The BHF Knowledge Hub

This new website platform has allowed us to develop our new BHF Knowledge Hub which is designed to host numerous disseminations, live webinars and podcasts and provide powerful topic, speaker and event search capabilities geared to meet the needs of our specific audiences and membership groups.

We are grateful for the Sport England funding we have received via the BEF to help fund the set-up, BEF member body dissemination and evaluation of the Knowledge Hub. It is really important to us that these crucial early years’ messages are shared across all disciplines and the support from the BEF has been instrumental in facilitating this objective.

We are also enormously proud to announce our partnership with KONEKTT which will provide the BHF with ongoing support for our ‘Knowledge Hub’, helping bring research-led, evidence-based welfare and management advice to yards across the UK. KONEKTT is a data-driven platform built to raise standards in equine care, who, like the BHF, believe good decisions start with good evidence. This collaboration reflects our shared commitment to putting that evidence directly into the hands of the people caring for horses every day

Introducing BHF Memberships – Coming Soon!

The British Horse Foundation (BHF) is delighted to announce the launch of two exciting new membership opportunities in 2027, bringing together people who share our passion for improving the breeding, management and lifelong wellbeing of horses.

Whether you want to support our charitable work or develop your knowledge and practical skills, our new memberships offer a fantastic opportunity to become more involved with the BHF and help shape a better future for horses.

Friends of the BHF is designed for those who want to support our mission while enjoying exclusive experiences and opportunities to connect with our team. Benefits will include our Better Beginnings magazine, behind-the-scenes visits, hosted events and meet-and-greet drinks receptions at leading equestrian events, including Blenheim International Horse Trials and London International Horse Show.

For those directly involved in breeding, raising or producing young horses, the BHF Breeder’s and Producer’s Club will offer practical learning opportunities and expert insight. Members will benefit from specialist training events, webinars with live Q&As, demonstrations and exclusive visits exploring topics such as young horse foot care, mare management and reproductive technologies.

Both memberships will cost £100 per individual per year, with places limited to just 30 members in each category for 2027. Group and corporate membership opportunities will also be available for Friends of the BHF, alongside group membership options for the Breeder’s and Producer’s Club.

Most importantly, membership fees will directly support the BHF’s charitable work, helping fund essential research, education, conferences, workshops, webinars and podcasts. Through collaboration with academic and industry colleagues, we champion research-led, evidence-based, high-welfare and sustainable approaches that benefit horses of every age and discipline.

As an entirely voluntary charitable organisation, the BHF relies on the support of people who share our vision. By becoming a member, you will help us advance best practice and promote lifelong equine wellbeing.

Memberships are launching soon! Keep an eye on our website and social media for further details on how to join us in 2027.

Celebrating past chair and trustees winning Best British Bred

Celebrating past chair and trustees winning Best British Bred

There was a superb 1st 🥇 and 2nd 🥈 finish for British Bred horses at the recent Defender Burghley Horse Trials.

Gemma Stevens and CHILLI KNIGHT dominated the competition, completing on their dressage score and a massive 13.4 penalties clear of the field. The 16 year old gelding was bred by owners, Chris and Lisa Stone and is by their late SHB (GB) graded, Badminton winning stallion, Chilli Morning. Chilli Knight’s dam was Kings Gem (Rock King - Kings Mistress) and Gemma also rode her to 5*.

Congratulations too, to Katie Magee on her first top three finish at 5*, finishing 2nd on Angela Hislop’s TREWORRA ( Jaguar Mail - Trewinnow by Tower of Magic), following their 5th place at Badminton in the Spring. Treworra was bred by long term supporters and former trustees of the BRITISH HORSE FOUNDATION , Vin and Liz Jones of Preci-Spark, who were also responsible for breeding the dam, Trewinnow.

Announcement of Chair Succession for the British Horse Foundation

Announcement of Chair Succession for the British Horse Foundation

We are delighted to announce the succession in the chair of The British Horse Foundation, marking an exciting new chapter for our organization.

Thanking the Outgoing Chair
First and foremost, we extend our deepest gratitude to Dr. Jane Hastie (nee Nixon) for her exceptional leadership and unwavering dedication during her 6-year tenure.

Under her guidance, the BHF has achieved remarkable growth, significantly raised its profile, and strengthened its impact within the equestrian community. Key achievements have been pan UK equestrian collaboration, including becoming a Member Body of the British Equestrian Federation (BEF), the biannual Better Beginnings conferences, webinars and an e-book focussing on the latest, best-practice evidence for supporting breeding and development of the young horse. Her vision and commitment have been instrumental in advancing our mission, and we are profoundly grateful for her contributions.

The Trustees are delighted to announce that Jane is to continue her input to the BHF as our new President.

Welcoming the New Chair Duo
As we bid au revoir to Jane, we are thrilled to welcome Yogi Breisner MBE and Dr. Jan Birch as the new Co-Chairs of the BHF.

To those who know Jane, it will come as no surprise that the Trustees recognised the need for two successors to work together to begin to fill her shoes.

With their extensive experience, passion for equestrian causes, and innovative ideas, we are confident that they will build upon the strong foundation laid by their predecessor. Between Yogi and Jan, they combine years of extensive practical and theoretical knowledge and the ability to bring together broad partnerships from across the industry to focus on key areas relevant for best-practice breeding and development for the sustainable future of the young horse.

Together we look forward to embarking on ambitious plans for the future that will further enhance our ability to serve the welfare of the horse and support the equestrian community in its pursuit of better breeding and best-practice management of the
youngster as it matures.
